Indian is well established and doesn't really cause any problems within the U.S., but as the world community becomes more interactive the confusion between aborigines called Indians and real Indians (from India) continues to grow, so at some point it might be a good idea to use a term that more accurately describes the aborigines--such as "aborigine."
