CRETE….A LAND OF DREAMS!

The meeting of sea and land, the joining of imposing high mountains and amazing beaches, the dance of the sun with rain, together compose this jewel which peacefully lies on the Mediterranean Sea.

Its beauty, strange combinations of nature, geographic location, climate and, great heritage make Crete different from all other places in the world. It was always the desire of the conquerors of Crete to remain here forever. No wonder ancient Greeks chose Crete to be the homeland of their King of Gods! Such grandeur, pride and sensuality could only be born on an island like Crete.  Bearing in mind that Crete is the homeland of Zeus, Minos, El Greco, Kazantzakis, Kornaros, Venizelos and many other major personalities of the arts, politics and sciences!
Its unique history has been marked by various civilizations that left their traces both on the architecture and traditions of the Cretan people. Crete’s influence on history and culture in the development of humankind is known throughout the world.
In more recent history Crete has acquired a reputation for something quite different…the secret to longevity! The Cretan diet has been the subject of discussions and scientific research and the findings prove that the traditional diet of Cretan people has had a revolutionary impact on  modern dietary habits of other Europeans. Crete’s traditional fresh cuisine is a vast contrast to the influx of fast food eaten in other parts of Europe. Fast food is rich in calories and poor in nutrients causing an increase in cases of dyslipidemia, circulatory and malignant diseases, and with these facts in mind many are turning to the Cretan diet to ensure a long and healthy life.

However, the secret of Cretan longevity is not only the diet but, also the wonderful Mediterranean climate.  It is known from ancient times that the father of medicine, Hippocrates, used to send his patients to Crete, with the belief that the climate would help to cure their diseases. It is beyond doubt that long periods of sunshine, without the danger of high ultraviolet radiation, registered on high levels in other parts of the world and the small temperature differences between wintertime and summer on Crete, are inhibitory factors for the prevention of diseases such as rickets, rheumatisms, allergic asthma and skin neoplasia, etc.

The wonderful high mountains of Crete, combined with winter rainfall provide a fine filter for Crete’s potable water.  It is by no coincidence that renal failure cases in Crete are very low compared to the rest of Europe.

The clean, unpolluted beaches of Crete (due to the low presence of heavy industry), and the open sea with currents invite visitors for a pleasurable swim, without the fear of skin diseases.
The beautiful Cretan landscape and the quiet pace of life, create a feeling of inner peace, and a tranquillity that, combined with the sensuality of Crete, nourishes the human hormonal system enhancing emotional equilibrium.  
Despite being an island, Crete is accessible to the rest of the world. Having three main and several minor ports and two large international airports all linking Crete to both national and international destinations.

Crete provides a high standard of University education for young people, as well as good job opportunities.
Services in healthcare provide an infrastructure of hospitals and health centres, fully equipped with highly trained staff, who together ensure the well-being both of residents and visitors.
