Granada, Nicaragua was founded in 1524 and is the oldest colonial city in the Americas. The city has a rich history that includes the exploits of William Walker who attempted to burn the city down in 1856.
Today, the city is thrives as a unique destination in Nicaragua. The city is located near the base of Volcan Mombacho and at the edge of Lake Nicaragua, the only lake that is home to freshwater sharks. Nearby are located other attractions, such as the Isletas, which are over 360 islands created when nearby Volcano Mombacho exploded 2,000 years ago. One can also visit the nearby artisan markets of Masaya, or Laguna de Apoyo, a beautiful clear lagoon which is also the lowest point in Central America. More adventurous tourists can also visit the two nearby volcanoes, Volcan Mombacho (includes a reserve) and Volcan Masaya (also a museum and national park)
Among these other sites, can be seen the emergence of new businesses that make the city a popular tourist destination. Tour companies, restaurants, hotels and real estate companies abound, each offering a unique twist.
One can also find existing Nicaraguan businesses such as the market (mercado) where locals sell vegetables, fruits, meat, clothes and home supplies. Along the busy streets, one can find locals taking their shot at being small business owners by selling clothes, changing money or offering access to vacation rentals and real estate.
Transportation is readily available, a taxi can be taken anywhere in the city for less than 50 cents. Buses leave the city regularly to nearby masaya, or the capital, Managua among other places. Flights can be taken to Managua where a taxi can be taken to Granada, or a tour operator can be contracted in advance.
