Roman Colosseum

The original name for the Colosseo is the Anfiteatrum Flavium. It was built by emperor Vespasiano and inaugurated in 80 A.D.
 
 It was the greatest amphitheatre of the antiquity, and was built in Rome - Italy, about 2000 years ago. It is considered an architectural and engineering wonder of the world, and It remains as a standing proof of both the grandeur and the cruelty of the Roman civilization.
 
 After the splendour of imperial times, the Colosseum was abandoned, and in turn it became a fortress for the medieval clans of the city of Rome, a source for building materials and a picturesque scenery for painters, and later a place of Christian worship.
 
 In ancient times it was the site of the "Naumachie" or navy-battles, the "Munera" or gladiator-fights, and the "Venationes" or wild animal-hunts.
